5 Things You Haven’t Tried That Will Help Baby Sleep

Getting a baby to sleep soundly is one of the biggest challenges new parents face. While you may have already tried rocking, lullabies, and white noise, some lesser-known techniques can work wonders. If your baby is still struggling with sleep, here are five gentle tricks you may not have tried yet.

1. Adjust the Room Temperature
Sometimes the room is just a bit too warm or too cool. Babies sleep best in a room that’s between 68–72°F (20–22°C). Try adjusting the thermostat or using a fan for better airflow — comfort can make all the difference.

2. Use a Consistent Scent
Babies respond well to familiar smells. A soft scent like lavender (baby-safe and diluted) in their room or on a sleep blanket can create a calming sleep association over time.

3. Try a Gentle Tummy Massage
A light tummy massage before bed can relieve gas and calm your baby’s nervous system. Use gentle, circular motions to help soothe them — it can become part of a relaxing bedtime ritual.

4. Introduce a Sleep Cue Phrase
Saying the same phrase like “It’s sleepy time now” before every nap or bedtime helps your baby associate those words with sleep. Repetition builds routine, and routine builds better sleep habits.

5. Create a Wind-Down Zone
Before bedtime, dim the lights, reduce noise, and keep stimulation low for at least 30 minutes. Avoid screens and loud toys — this helps signal to your baby’s brain that sleep is coming.

With a little experimentation and patience, these gentle techniques can make bedtime a calmer, more predictable experience. Every baby is different, so trust your instincts and find what works best for your little one.
