Tips: Preparing to go Back to Work While Breastfeeding

Returning to work while continuing to breastfeed can feel overwhelming, but with a little planning and support, it’s absolutely manageable. Many mothers successfully balance both, and preparing ahead of time can make the transition smoother for you and your baby.

Start by building a freezer stash of expressed milk about 2–3 weeks before your return. Pump once a day (often after a morning feeding) and store the milk in clearly labeled bags. This gives you peace of mind knowing your baby will have enough milk while you’re away.

Talk to your employer in advance about your pumping needs. By law in many places, you’re entitled to breaks and a private space to pump. Bring a reliable pump to work, and plan on pumping about every 3–4 hours to maintain your milk supply.

Lastly, practice bottle-feeding with your baby a week or two before going back. Let someone else offer the bottle while you’re out of the room to ease the adjustment. Remember, it’s a learning curve for both of you — and with consistency and self-care, you’ll find your rhythm in no time.
